It can take weeks for ransomware to penetrate a company’s systems completely. During that period, the malicious parties have complete access to your personal files, folders, and financial information, which they might easily steal and resell on the dark web or use as leverage to force you to pay again.
Remember that paying the demanded ransom for your data that’s been taken hostage by ransomware doesn’t necessarily mean that you’ll get all your files back. On average, businesses were only able to retrieve 64% of their data, implying that more than a third of data is lost forever. Figure 1 depicts the percentage of data that an organisation was able to recover over the course of a year following an attack.
