Pure Storage®, the IT pioneer that delivers the world’s most advanced data storage technologies and services, announced that The University of Western Australia (UWA), a world top 100 university (QS World University Rankings 2025) with more than 28,000 students across undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral programs, is leveraging the Pure Storage platform through an Evergreen//One subscription to revolutionise the University’s data storage infrastructure, supporting the launch of a new high-speed, high-performance data research network.
Customer Challenge
UWA is frequently ranked as one of the top 100 universities in the world due to its strong reputation for excellence in research. The University relies on its high-speed, high-performance technology environments to handle research data, analysis, and advanced modelling in fields as diverse as medical research, to defence and climate modelling.
To prepare for the next decade of growth, the University committed to leading a major transformation of its data storage environment to support the growing research and other data needs across all Schools. This digital transformation initiative involved discontinuing a legacy storage system that was expensive to maintain and challenging to scale.
Customer Impact of Pure Storage
After carefully evaluating their future data storage requirements, UWA decided to migrate to a Pure Storage all-flash solution, housed in an outsourced data centre environment, managed by long-time systems integrator partner Atturra.

By replacing its legacy storage system with a dedicated Pure Storage data platform delivered via Pure Storage’s STaaS solution Evergreen//One, UWA has significantly enhanced its capacity to support critical research. The new all-flash storage platform enables UWA to efficiently manage over 6 PB of research storage on a smaller footprint, ensuring ongoing high performance and reliability for its most demanding research projects. - Streamlined Storage Management for Maximum Scalability.UWA selected Pure Storage FlashBlade//E consumed via the Evergreen//One subscription to support the managed service environment as part of a larger managed service. This approach allows UWA to scale capacity up or down instantly while still achieving the security and performance of an all-flash, sustainable infrastructure.
- Improved Data Centre Footprint.UWA reduced its data centre footprint dramatically from 2.5 rack units in its legacy environment, to less than half a rack in the new data centre.
- Improved Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) Outcomes.Pure Storage’s platform allows UWA to meet and exceed its ESG obligations and targets. The new storage environment requires 80% less power to operate, and significantly less cooling when compared to their legacy storage environment.
- Enhanced Data Protection with SafeMode.Pure Storage’s SafeMode ensures data protection against ransomware with immutable snapshots, ensuring data cannot be deleted and can be recovered at any point.
