Is This New IT Just a Phase?

Lenovo claims that its Infrastructure Solutions Group (ISG) can deliver intelligent infrastructure solutions to businesses of any size. The platform acts as a conduit for providing and enabling more advanced and intelligent IT solutions for all market participants, from small and medium-sized businesses to multinational conglomerates. And the new IT is key for the future of the industry.

Recent conversations with Lenovo’s Sumir Bhatia, President, Asia Pacific, Lenovo Infrastructure Solutions Group, piqued DSA’s interest in the company’s legacy in the tech industry and its plans for the future in the wake of the great technological paradigm shift that occurred only a few short years ago.

Thanks to our insightful conversation with Sumir, we now know that Lenovo is fully committed to the “New IT,” the next evolution of the industry’s standard information technology. What is new IT? As defined by Lenovo, it is the “next-gen architecture,” which encompasses the use of client devices, edge computing, cloud computing, networks, and Artificial Intelligence to alleviate the problems faced by CTOs and propel global digitalisation in all industries.

A Devoted Research and Development Strategy

Sumir stated, “Of the 75,000 people now employed by Lenovo, more than 15,000 are engaged in research and development.” Further, he added, “And we have 18 R&D centres spread out in all corners of the globe.”

This remark strongly expresses the current status or future course of the corporation, which is to turbocharge its patented ideas and patent-pending IT solutions and infrastructures. Despite massive layoffs in the tech industry this year from companies like Google, Coinbase, and Tesla, Lenovo is pressing through with plans to employ over 12,000 new and fresh talents in research and development by 2023. Additionally, the company is thinking of “doubling our R&D spending for the next two years,” as Sumir put it.

Growth can be both beneficial and detrimental to a business, so it’s important to consider the pros and cons before embarking on a growth strategy. As we have shown, the pandemic has accelerated the development of new technologies to such a degree that the progress that would have taken 10–20 years has been accomplished in just 3–4 years. But when things return to normal, the same expansion wrecked many businesses as the technologies that were utilised to assist and produce new IT solutions eventually turned against their developer, causing the great layoff of 2022.

One Platform to Rule Them All

Sumir emphasised Lenovo’s transformation from a consumer and endpoint focus to the global infrastructure of edge, and the cloud throughout our meeting where he called the ISG a smart infrastructure.

In the three years after the pandemic began, the majority of the industry has undergone a digital transition into a consumption-based market, with company owners of all sizes turning to the cloud. To this day, hybrid multi-cloud architectures remain the standard, so most business owners are still getting their hands dirty with the multi-cloud environment. Sumir has observed that the ISG thrives on this kind of thinking by offering the requisite infrastructures where performance, scalability, and sustainability are heavily taken into mind.

The Lenovo Neptune is a fantastic example of this, as mentioned by Sumir. Neptune is poised to address the data centre infrastructure heat problem in accordance with the ISG’s three guiding principles: Performance, scalability, and sustainability. The concept’s name gives it away: It’s the next step from “energy saving” to “performance-boosting” and “energy reuse” in terms of actuality. Neptune represents a comprehensive strategy for using liquid-based cooling for data centres and analytics. Neptune also supports liquid cooling for data analytics GPUs. Sure this is not exactly ground-breaking news at this point but at the enterprise level and considering the macroeconomics pressure at the time of writing, I would say it means a lot.

The New IT

“At times of uncertainty, there are obviously black swans in the market. The one thing that brings a level of certainty is an investment in infrastructure, IT solutions and the new IT,” beautifully pieced together by Sumir.

Today, businesses are rethinking their customer-facing stance, the structure of their workforce, and the methods through which their clients use their products and services. Adopting the new IT is necessary for the existing infrastructure. Lenovo is among the key players in the development of cutting-edge information technology; the company is behind, for example, the introduction of the ISG and, one can only hope, its further expansion.
