DayOne Breaks Ground on First Hyperscale Data Centre in Singapore

DayOne Signs Power Purchase Agreement with Sembcorp Power to Enable 100% Renewable Energy for the New Data Centre

DayOne, a Singapore-headquartered global data centre pioneer, has broken ground on its first data centre in Singapore. The 20-megawatt (MW) facility spans about 40,000 square metres of gross floor area, with Phase One scheduled to be ready-for-service (RFS) in 2026.

The groundbreaking event also saw the signing of two key strategic partnerships for DayOne. The first partnership is for a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with Sembcorp Power Pte Ltd, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Sembcorp Industries (Sembcorp) to power its data centre where all operations will be fully covered with renewable energy. The second one is a research and development partnership agreement with the National University of Singapore (NUS) to advance data centre innovation as part of the Sustainable Tropical Data Centre Testbed Phase 2.0 (STDCT 2.0) initiative.

A Green Facility Soon to Rise in Singapore

The facility will feature green-powered high-density air-cooled Graphics Processing Unit (GPU) support, hybrid air, and liquid cooling technologies. It is also expected to be Singapore’s first data centre with on-site Solid Oxide Fuel Cell (SOFC) power generation, part of a pioneering proof-of-concept for hydrogen-based energy. By piloting SOFC, DayOne aims to accelerate the adoption of innovative green solutions, enhance diversification of energy sources for the data centre industry, and support the city-state’s sustainability goals. Both LEED Platinum and BCA Green Mark Platinum (GMDC:2024) certifications will be applied for, aligning with the highest environmental and energy performance standards for data centres.

DayOne was awarded capacity under the Pilot Data Centre Call for Application (DC-CFA) by the Infocomm Media Development Authority (IMDA) and the Singapore Economic Development Board (EDB), enabling the development of this flagship site anchoring the successful execution of the Singapore-Johor-Riau Islands (SIJORI) regional strategy. The award reflects confidence in DayOne’s advanced energy-efficient solutions and proven capabilities in delivering sustainable digital infrastructure.

“This facility marks our commitment to Singapore as both home base and regional hub while highlighting our long-term vision to power Southeast Asia’s digital transformation with green infrastructure,” said Jamie Khoo, Chief Executive Officer of DayOne Data Centres. “Our SG1 facility is an important milestone and a contribution to the nation’s ambition of being an Artificial Intelligence (AI)-ready, sustainable digital economy. Backed by strong public-private collaboration, we’re building infrastructure that is purpose-built for AI workloads, cloud computing and innovation.”

The groundbreaking ceremony was attended by senior government and industry leaders, including Aileen Chia, Deputy Chief Executive at Infocomm Media Development Authority (IMDA); Seah Yueh Chinn, Vice President at Digital Industry Singapore (DISG); and Christine Wong, Assistant Chief Executive Officer at JTC Corporation. Also in attendance were Lim Ah Doo, Co-Chairman of DayOne; Jamie Khoo, CEO of DayOne; Koh Chiap Khiong, President and CEO of Gas and Related Services and CEO, Singapore, at Sembcorp; Professor Lee Poh Seng, National University of Singapore (NUS); and other partners.

“Congratulations to DayOne on its first data centre in Singapore. Data centre operators like DayOne play an important role in advancing energy efficiency and green energy solutions in support of our digital economy and the sustainable growth of data centres in Singapore,” said Chia. “IMDA will continue to partner the industry to develop sustainable digital infrastructures and the ecosystem to serve the digital needs and growth of Singapore.”

“We welcome DayOne’s commitment to expand its digital infrastructure in Singapore,” added Chinn. “This new facility will enhance Singapore’s competitiveness by providing access to compute-intensive technologies like AI, while enabling key sectors to manage critical applications and services locally.”

Long-term Partnership with Sembcorp to Achieve 100% Renewable Energy

DayOne formalised a long-term partnership with Sembcorp through a 10-year Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) to supply its facility. The energy will be backed by bundled renewable energy certificates (RECs), sourced locally or imported via grid-to-grid connection. This strategic agreement marks a significant milestone in DayOne’s journey towards 100% renewable electricity, reinforcing its commitment to sustainability and clean energy adoption. This partnership lays the foundation for continued collaboration to support DayOne’s future growth and expansion.

“The rapid rise of AI infrastructure is driving unprecedented energy demand—and meeting this demand sustainably is critical to the future of the data center industry,” said Khiong. “By providing scalable and reliable renewable energy, we enable data centres to grow responsibly. Our collaboration with DayOne reflects this commitment to powering the next generation of digital infrastructure with clean, future-ready solutions.”

R&D Partnership with National University of Singapore

Additionally, DayOne launched a new research and development partnership with the NUS to jointly explore innovative technologies that improve data centre efficiency and sustainability. The partnership will support activities under the Sustainable Tropical Data Centre Testbed Phase 2.0 (STDCT 2.0), including pilot-scale testing of novel cooling solutions in tropical climates.

“This initiative underscores our collective commitment to reimagine how data centers in the tropics can perform effectively and sustainably,” said Professor Seng, STDCT Program Director and Head, Department of Mechanical Engineering, College of Design and Engineering, at NUS.  “Through the Sustainable Tropical Data Centre Testbed 2.0, we are field testing breakthroughs—from flexible-fuel generators/fuel cells to next generation liquid cooling—to demonstrate sustainability and high performance can go hand in hand. Together, we’re laying the foundation for a new class of energy efficient, climate resilient digital infrastructure in Singapore and across the region.”

The DayOne facility supports Singapore’s broader ambition to add at least 300MW of data centre capacity over the near term, as outlined in the Digital Connectivity Blueprint, a government framework to enhance global digital linkages and ensure the sustainable growth of foundational infrastructure. It also aligns with Singapore’s National AI Strategy 2.0, which emphasises the development of robust compute infrastructure to support AI innovation, model training and adoption across sectors.

DayOne’s Singapore data centre forms part of DayOne’s larger ambition to support digital transformation across the SIJORI Growth Triangle and build a resilient, low-carbon digital backbone for Southeast Asia. Established in 2022 and operating as an independent group since 2025, DayOne develops and operates data centres across Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, Japan, Hong Kong SAR, and other key markets.
