Digital Government Day: Can Malaysia Compete With Global Giants? Alibaba Cloud Believes So

Malaysia’s digital landscape is falling behind? Well, it seems that Malaysia’s Ministry of Digital would like to turn that question into a myth. Facilitated by the government, Alibaba Cloud has launched the Digital Accelerator Program during the Digital Government Day event, which was held in Putrajaya on 1st August 2024.

This initiative is set to transform the country’s IT landscape by upskilling Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs) and driving innovation through advanced Artificial Intelligence (AI) and cloud technologies. This collaboration is more than just a partnership – it’s a bold step towards reshaping Malaysia’s digital economy!

A Minister’s Vision for a Digital Malaysia

Yang Berhormat Gobind Singh Deo, Minister of Digital Malaysia, delivered an impassioned speech at the event, underscoring the critical importance of embracing the digital economy. “The question is, will we take part in this digital journey and benefit from it, or will we sit back and let others move ahead?” he asked, challenging Malaysia to step up and seize the opportunities before them.

With the digital economy expected to contribute nearly a quarter to Malaysia’s GDP by 2025, the Minister highlighted the urgency of this transformation. He noted the country’s strong performance in attracting investments, with approved investments reaching RM329.5 billion in 2023.

He emphasised the government’s role in ensuring robust infrastructure to support this growth. “We wanted to empower citizens to transact and succeed from anywhere,” Gobind said, reflecting on the government’s efforts to double Internet speeds and reduce costs. He also stressed the importance of spreading the culture of digital skills learning across all residential groups in Malaysia, extending beyond well-developed cities to include urban and rural areas.

But infrastructure is only part of the equation. The Minister made it clear that embracing AI and other emerging technologies is crucial for staying competitive. “Can our government ensure that infrastructure keeps pace with technological developments? We are committed to preparing the country, ensuring that our infrastructure is safe and secure,” he stated, underscoring the government’s proactive stance on cybersecurity and data protection.

In line with the government’s vision, Alibaba Cloud’s Digital Accelerator Program is poised to play a crucial role in Malaysia’s digital transformation. This program isn’t just about offering training; it’s about building an inclusive ecosystem that empowers everyone, from startups to rural communities.

Kun Huang, General Manager of South APAC at Alibaba Cloud Intelligence, captured the essence of this initiative: “By empowering startups, partners, and rural communities with AI-driven digital training and cutting-edge technology, we are committed to propelling cloud and AI technology forward, as well as nurturing homegrown digital talents.”

This initiative aims to certify over 500 startups by 2025, offering them up to USD $120,000 in funding and resources to fuel their growth. For rural communities, the program is equally ambitious, aiming to upskill 10,000 students in regions like Selangor, Johor, Penang, Sarawak, and Sabah. Even better, it’s not just students who stand to benefit! Alibaba Cloud is also looking to groom 50 Independent Software Vendors (ISVs), equipping them with the cloud knowledge they need to help 1,000 SMEs on their digitalisation journey this year!

In a bid to put Malaysia on the map of AI innovation, Alibaba Cloud is making its generative AI development platform, Model Studio, available to local businesses! This platform, which includes Alibaba Cloud’s large language model Qwen, will enable Malaysian companies to develop custom AI applications across various industries, further propelling the nation into the future!

The collaboration between the Malaysian government and Alibaba Cloud is a clear sign that the country is serious about its digital future. With initiatives like the Digital Accelerator Program, Malaysia is not just preparing to compete in the digital economy – it’s gearing up to lead! But, as Gobind highlighted, the success of these efforts will depend on everyone’s participation.

For Malaysia, this initiative couldn’t have come at a better time! The country has witnessed many of its regional neighbours advance their IT landscapes over the years, setting a high bar for digital transformation. In comparison, Malaysia has been at risk of falling behind. By focusing on upskilling and embracing the latest technologies offered, Malaysia is positioning itself to enhance its digital landscape significantly!

“The rest is up to you,” the Minister concluded, putting the onus on businesses, educators and citizens to make the most of the opportunities being created. With the right support and a shared commitment to digitalisation, Malaysia is set to make waves in the global digital economy. With big dreams and big bets on the line, will we finally be able to see this beating nation of Southeast Asia as one of the leaders of digitalisation in the future?

Only time can tell, and it’s to the leaders of the nation now to realise this grand dream.
